The Satellite Broadband Multimedia System for IPv6 (SATIP6) project will examine the most immediate technical issues facing satellite broadband access in the coming years, namely the functions to be implemented in the protocol layer between physical medium access and the IP layer (i.e. typically layer 2).The introduction of IPv6 (compared to today’s IPv4) requires modification of user applications and network infrastructure, which will be a gradual process and will be implemented differently in different parts of the global network.

The satellite system and notably the satellite transport protocols as well as the interfacing and the inter-working with the core network at the gateway stations will need to be adapted to provide cost-effective services compatible with terrestrial network IPv6 services.
