Ten years ago with the very first communications between two independent implementations, IPv6 became reality!

References:

  • RFC 3160 "The Tao of IETF", section 7 "How to Contribute to the IETF -- What You Can Do", about the importance of "running code" for IETF,
  • the log of a communication between:
    • ottawa, using the "INRIA" IPv6 stack (written by Francis Dupont, today at Point6) on NetBSD;
    • sipper, using the IPv6 stack of OSF/1 (developed by a Digital team lead by Jim Bound, today "HP Fellow" and IPv6 Forum CTO).
